Richards’ Great Britain loss a nail biter to Serbia


Looking for their first win at the London Invitational Tournament, Great Britain played a solid basketball game against Serbia.

Team GB finished the opening quarter with a four-point lead 22-18 but Serbia battled back to tie the game 44-44 to end the first half.

In the third quarter, Great Britain lost two key players to injuries (via HoopsFix).

Team captain Drew Sullivan suffered a groin injury getting fouled going to the basket while Joel Freeland twisted his ankle on a rebound play.

Serbia instantly capitalized taking their first lead of the game, 50-48. But Robert Archibald’s  3-point play put GB up 54-52.

Led by Nenad Krstic and Milos Teodosic, Serbia held a 59-55 lead with just under 5 minutes left to play in third quarter.

However, Great Britain wouldn’t go down easily.

Three consecutive three pointers, two by Dan Clark and one by Devon Van Oostrum, gave Team GB a four-point lead 66-63 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter and held a 73-69 lead entering the fourth.

Serbia took control in final period and held an 81-77 lead with 6:36 left in the game. But Team GB refused to give up. Behind Andrew Lawrence and Mike Lenzly, Great Britain closed the gap to 87-84 with 4 minutes left in the game.

From there, Team GB went toe-to-toe with Serbia. Lenzly’s tough drive to the basket, cut Serbia’s lead to one 92-91 with 2:30 left.

Another Lenzly layup gave Team GB a 95-93 lead with 1:11 minutes remaining, However, Lawrence turned the ball over at half court on the ensuing possession, leading to a Serbian fast break lay-up to tie the game.

GB couldn’t convert on the other end, giving Serbia the final possession.

With the game tied at 95, Teodosic ran down the clock before getting free on a baseline drive and finished at the rim with 2 seconds remaining giving Serbia a 97-95 victory over Great Britain.

Team GB had balanced scoring effort with six players reaching double figures; Boateng had 15, Lenzly, and Reinking 13 apiece, Clark had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Lawrence had 12 and Archibald 11.

Spurs draftee Ryan Richards went scoreless in nine minutes of action. He grabbed two rebounds and had one assists.

Nenad Krstic led Serbia with 21 points, while Dusko Savanovic scored 20 before leaving the game with an injury.

Team GB will play against China on Saturday, while Serbia go up against Australia.

  1. Not happy to see Richards playing few minutes in three games, maybe the injury to Freeland and Sullivan is the break he needs to shine in this tournament.
