Bertans double-double not enough against Poland

Even a double-double performance from Davis Bertans  could not save Latvia from suffering their third straight setback at the FIBA U19 World Championship.

Poland started the game on a strong note scoring at will going to their big men early. The first quarter ended with Latvia trailing 13-27 then Poland continued their dominance in the second quarter and headed halftime leading 52-27.

The Latvians made some adjustment after halftime and limit Poland to score just 12 points in the third period and then made a furious rally in the final quarter to cut Poland’s large margin but it wasn’t enough.

In the end, Poland held on to win 86-78.

Kaspars Vecvagars led Latvia with 21 points and Bertans  had a solid performance scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards while shooting 42.9 percent from the field.

  1. Bertans needs more help for Latvia to advance. It ain’t happening, but in my opinion he has shown a lot of potential. If he can be more consistent, he will only get better.

  2. Bertans has been very inconsistent in this FIBA tournament, Latvia can only go as far as Bertans can take them.

  3. Whatever happens Latvia should be proud for making it to the 2nd round. It appears to me that Davis Bertans will be NBA ready in 1-2 years.
