Adam Hanga named to Hungarian National team

As reported by Basketball in England,  Hungary released their preliminary squad for the upcoming EuroBasket 2011 Additional Qualifying Round that will kick off on August 9 in Coimbra, Portugal.

Adam Hanga, the 59th overall pick of the San Antonio Spurs in the 2011 NBA Draft, along with veterans Peter Lorant and Marton Fodor was named to the Hungarian squad, which will play against Finland and Portugal for the last two spots in the main draw of the EuroBasket Men 2011 in Lithuania.

The 25-year-old power forward, Lorant, is optimistic about their chances, but they know that Finland and Portugal will also be going all out to take one of the two remaining EuroBasket spots.

“They’ll have the same hunger as us,” Lorant said. “It’s a big opportunity for the smaller teams like us because the next time, it will probably be more difficult to make it.

But, I have a lot of confidence in our team. I’m not saying that we are better than them, but we want to beat them. And we have a lot of work to do to be able to do that.”

As part of their preparation for their upcoming campaign, Hungary will take on Asian champions Iran on July 18 in Szombathely and on July 20 in Kormend. The team will also travel to Austria for a series of friendly matches.

Add Hanga to the long list of Spurs players/draftees that will represent their home countries this summer. This will give the Spurs and their fans a preview on what to expect on their draft picks and see how will they perform in the Olympic qualifiers.

  2. Looks like a lot of Spurs players will be very busy playing basketball for the Olympic qualifiers. This is all good as long as they all avoid significant injuries. Especially, Manu, Tony and Tiago.

  3. I saw some of his highlight videos he is fast on a straight path, he still very raw but athletic and he needs to add more muscle. Playing in the qualifiers will help him gain valuable experience and further develop his game.

  4. Adam Hanga has a lot of time to develop. I don’t see him joining the Spurs anytime soon. Maybe after 2 years he’ll be in San Antonio if the Spurs likes how he develops.
