With not much NBA basketball to talk about due to the lockout, Bleacher Report’s Jesse Dorsey made a list of the Top 50 highest paid players in the NBA and discussed “Who’s Worth the Money and Who’s Not?”
The San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker were on the list.
Here’s what he has to say about them.
23. Tim Duncan: $21.3 Million
Duncan is overpaid for what he is doing on the court, but for what he has done in the past he deserves it.
If I could have Duncan score 13 and get nine boards for $21 million or Al Horford score 15 and get closer to 10 boards for $12 million, I would probably still pick Duncan, but I would have to think about it.
Duncan still has the intangibles, plus he is the best leader in the NBA (I put him just above Steve Nash), something you can’t really put a dollar sign on.
39. Tony Parker: $12.5 Million
Tony Parker isn’t Chris Paul or Deron Williams, but he is a very fine point guard and he works perfectly in the system that the Spurs have him in.
Parker was the starting point guard for their three championship teams in the past decade.
45. Manu Ginobili: $12.981 Million
By far, Manu Ginobili is the most unique player to have played in my lifetime. Outwardly he looks to have no athletic ability; in fact, I would guess that he is an accountant or a lawyer before I would guess that he’s a basketball player.
Ginobili is the most important player on the Spurs right now and the reason the Spurs aren’t done yet.
Those are pretty kinds words for the Spurs’ “Big Three”.
And for a reason. Duncan, Ginobili and Parker has helped the Spurs win multiple NBA championships and is the main reason why the franchise has become perennial title contenders over the past decade.
Duncan is certainly the best leader in the NBA, Parker might not be the best point guard in the league but his style of play fits the Spurs perfectly and Ginobili is one the fiercest player to ever play the game and the team’s emotional leader.
What they have done for the franchise, the city of San Antonio and the fans can be considered priceless.
What do you guys think? Are the Spurs overpaying any of the Big Three? Or do they all deserve their money’s worth.
These guys deserved the money, they mean so much to the Spurs and the San Antonio community.
I think Jesse Dorsey said it very well. Great stuff from BR.
“If I could have Duncan score 13 and get nine boards for $21 million or Al Horford score 15 and get closer to 10 boards for $12 million, I would probably still pick Duncan”
How cool was that? priceless indeed! Go Spurs Go!
I love these Spurs trio, they certainly earn all the money they are receiving from the Spurs. They are worth it.
Let’s put it this way I’d certainly like to hear what this idiot would have to say about Rashard Lewis earning over $20 million last season ! List of highest paid players in the NBA as of the end of the 2010-11 season .
Spurs team salaries
tophatal ……..
Tophatal, I provided a link for the original article at Bleacher Report, there he ranked Lewis as the main reason why NBA fans will miss at least 2 months of basketball or possibly the entire season.
It’s like him saying that Lewis is Mr. Lockout, Gilbert Arenas comes in 2nd.
Everyone thanks for the comments and reads.
Yeah you’re right . Personally I’d suggest that they prolong the WNBA schedule have the players there scantly dressed in a two piece revealing type of uniform ! It may sound sexist but who cares if it heightens the exposure then they’ve nothing to lose ! Besides I’m sure that’d peek the interest of the males out there who hunger for basketball and seeing one or two svelte females dribble a ball up and down a basketball court ! And as far as the idiotic lawsuit by the league hierarchy …. if the union chooses to de-certify , their action isn’t illegal at all . But you’d be hard pressed to convince Stern to the contrary . I mean when was the last time he actually practiced law much less deliberated in the presence of a judge in a courtroom ? Earning those god-damn …. millions over the past two decades have made him a fat lazy , insidious and a conniving ba##ard ! That’s all now y’all hear ! I’m out !
Screw David Stern preferably place him into a piece of lead casing and drop his a#s into the deepest point of the Pacific Ocean !
tophatal ……………
Simply put, somethings or some people you can not put a price tag on. Their value is priceless, just like GOLD. These BIG THREE could have won Championships anywhere else, it just happen to be San Antonio. They are still worth every penny and It just happen to be San Antonio is the LUCKY ones to have them. Yes, even Bos, LAL and Chi big three reign came to an end, maybe it’s just once in a life time. Be happy for what we got now because one of this day will be grateful to have had them.
Too bad that Kobe Bryant will be gone in a couple years.Long live number 24.
Not me. Duncan is getting paid too much right now. Maybe even last season but for sure right now. If you can get a PF/C that can give you 20/10 and for 12 mil. I would do it in a heart beat, then go out and get another big right under that for the other 9 mil. Age in months at this point for Timmy is exponential not Linear when it comes to the hardwood. It would be really sad if he declines drastically in his last year making that kind of bank and everybody wondering what happened. He’s human people not everlasting. It’s a slow death for this team and we are witnessing the beginning of it. Can’t wait for the new generation of players… Anderson, Leonard, Splitter, Blair, Richards, Neal, Hanga, and yes Parker he’ll be in the transition with those guys add some free agents and more draft picks and they’ll be fun to watch. Can’t say they they’ll win championships but at least they wont run out of gas. GO Spurs GO!
On the surface, the Spurs maybe overpaying Duncan in the last two seasons especially if we look at his stats. But like what Mr. Dorsey said
“Duncan is overpaid for what he is doing on the court, but for what he has done in the past he deserves it. Duncan still has the intangibles, plus he is the best leader in the NBA something you can’t really put a dollar sign on”
