Video: Richards leads GB, Rout Netherlands in Exhibition play

As reported by HoopsFix, Great Britain got their summer campaign off to a winning start with a 96-70 rout of Netherlands in Cobham, Surrey, on Sunday night.

The game was a chance for head coach Chris Finch to see his team in competitive action and he was pleased with the performance:

“We’ve done a much better job of coming into camp in good shape this year, that showed today in comparison to last year.

“It was our first game so we didn’t have a lot of expectations, we’re just trying to figure out what the guys can do and help them. We have to get better at everything, but it’s early and I’m pleased with how we played.

“We had a pretty young team; they played fearlessly and with a lot of energy. We will have quite a few cuts to make so it was important to spread the minutes out, our agenda is to assess the guys and see what they can do.”

All 14 players on the roster saw at least 10 minutes of action as Finch looks to make further cuts to his team in the final weeks.

San Antonio Spurs draftee Ryan Richards led Team GB with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in just 11 minutes.

Kyle Johnson had 14 points, Eric Boateng scored  13 points and grabbed six rebounds and Matthew Bryan-Amaning added 10 points.

Richards’ GB U20s teammates Alex Marcotullio and Devon Van Oostrum scored nine and eight points respectively.

Aron Roye led the Netherlands with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Arvin Slagter added 17 points and five assists.

  2. Looks like the live stream isn’t working, but nice update on Ryan Richards. I think this a huge step for him as far as making the GB team is concerned.

  3. It seems like Richards hasn’t missed a beat picking from where he left of at the GB U20s. Now it’s his time to shine at GB senior team.

  4. He’s not on the senior team. And if he can’t make the senior team then doesn’t look like he’ll be here the next time the Spurs suit up. Maybe a Toro uni. Like Richards a lot but he needs to impress against the D-Leaguers first.

    • I do hope Richards makes it to the senior team, that way he will gain valuable basketball experience and exposure on international play.

I do agree that he must prove himself first before being named to the Spurs roster and playing sometime with the Austin Toros before playing for the Spurs wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Thanks for the regular reads and comments everyone!
