Manu intends to retire with the Spurs, but near future maybe with Virtus Bologna

In a recent interview with, San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili  says that he has at least two or three years more as a basketball player and stressed that his intention is to finish his career with the Spurs.

Manu Ginobili expressed his intentions to retire with the San Antonio Spurs.

“I do not have much left, I am 34 years old. I have two or three years, I will take some time to analyze things and then decide on what to do,” Ginobili said.

Manu continued:

“I have two years left on my contract with San Antonio and my intention is not to play in another team and to retire as a Spur.”

Ginobili as talked about playing in the 2012 London 2012 Olympics.

“At the time I renewed my contract (with San Antonio) it was completely clear that  in 2011 and 2012, I was going to play for Argentina, no question. They tried to convince me, but the Olympic game is non-negotiable ” said Ginobili.

Beyond the Olympics,  Ginobili is aware that the NBA lockout will force him to make a decision about his immediate future, which may include Virtus Bologna of Italy.

“They called my agent saying that they want me in the roster for the upcoming season. A lot of things came up to my mind and I thought about accepting the proposal for all the experiences I have lived with that jersey. Then I decided that I will evaluate all my options going forward” Ginobili said.

Ginobili also mentioned that he will give his response to the offer of the Italian club in early October, but said he hoped the NBA lockout issue is resolved quickly.

Nevertheless, the owner of Virtus Bologna Claudio Sabatini doesn’t want to create false expectations for the fans.

“There are two considerations to make about Ginobili:

First is that dreaming his return to Bologna is not a sin.

Second, I don’t want to create false expectations among the fans so I can say that there are little chances to sign Manu Ginobili.

But, until there is even one possibility to get him, I have to try.

We are waiting to know from Ginobili when he is available and for how long. It is not just about his salary, there is also the insurance.

But I want to thank him for the considerations he gave and is giving to Virtus Bologna.”

  1. Manu should retire a Spur, same as Duncan and Parker. I hope he chooses to rest for a while before playing for another club overseas as the lockout drags on.

  2. Thanks God, there is is little chance that Ginobili actually signs with Virtus Bologna, I hope he stays put after a grueling tournament and focus on getting better for the upcoming NBA season…

I think the lockout will be lifted sooner than most of us expected.

  3. Manu and the rest if the Big 3 deserves their jersey to be hanging at the AT&T rafters, all of them should retire a Spur. Go Spurs Go!

  5. I wish Manu will opt to rest and just wait for the lockout to resume instead of playing overseas during the lockout.

It’s not surprising that he likes to retire a Spur, that is a nice gesture from him.
